GLBT Community Center
In 2003, the Center marks its seventh year of service to Houston¹s
GLBT community and allies. This is a pivotal time in our history.
Every month, more individuals participate in Center programs,
and organizations from across the community increasingly choose
the Center as a venue for meetings and events. The most recent
group to join the Center is the local chapter of PFLAG (Parents,
Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). Individuals continue
to use the Center as the central resource for new activities.
These include the GLOBAL (University of Houston GLBT student
group) Texas Association for Transsexual Support and The Art
Group: A GLBT Group for All Houston Artists. To maintain and
expand such opportunities for the community, the Center depends
on the support of dedicated organizations and individuals. The
Center¹s own programming continues to expand with the
recent addition of a Men¹s Coming Out Group, an outgoing
schedule of Relationship Seminars and a School Outreach Program
designed to promote the formation of Gay Straight
Alliances in area high schools. The Center¹s programming
also includes a weekly Lesbian Coming Out Group and In Our
Own Write, a wildly successful poetry night.

The formation of People With AIDS Coalition - Houston, Inc
(PWA Coalition) in 1986 was in response to the growing AIDS
epidemic facing the gay and lesbian community. The gay and
lesbian community responded to this personal crisis by organizing
a volunteer board of directors as well as volunteer agency
staff. In addition to managing the agency, this working volunteer
board designed and developed all programs, services, and outreach
efforts. Originally, PWA Coalition addressed alternate healing
therapies and methods for Persons Living With HIV/AIDS. The
New Beginnings Household Restart Program, also known as the
Warehouse Project was the first federally funded program started
and is still providing services for clients today. Over the
past 17 years, the face of HIV/AIDS has evolved into a multicultural
disease. While the gay and lesbian community is still greatly
affected by HIV/AIDS and PWA Coalition continues to respond
to these needs, the disease has spread into other communities
as well. Like those first volunteers, PWA Coalition has responded
to this evolution by continually assessing the value of our
programs and services and in turn rising to the challenge
of change by developing new programs to meet client needs,
while still remembering our roots. PWA Coalition programs
added over the last 17 years include, but are not limited
to: New Beginnings Household Restart Program, Case Management,
Milam House, Steps to Healthier Life, Child Care Services,
The Volunteer Program, and Direct Emergency Assistance. PWA
Coalition continues its tradition of convenient delivery of
services while in an atmosphere of multicultural access and
understanding.
